In
my previous post, I talked about Fertility Awareness Methods (FAM) with detailed
explanations, in this post, I am going to address some of the most commonly ask
questions about conception methods.
Most
of these questions are subjects of discussion among Married women. There are
some of them,
1. How likely is a woman to become
pregnant when she has sex during monthly period? Click here for answer.
This is a
frequently asked question among school girls, the answer to this
question is yes, and I am going to explain how it happens.
During monthly
period, the chance of pregnancy is low but not zero.
Bleeding dose not
interfere with pregnancy, it does not promote or prevent pregnancy. The chance
of pregnancy is lowest during the first few days of the bleeding, for example,
on day 2 of the cycle, the chance of getting pregnant is less than 1%, but as
the day progresses, the chance increase.
Whether or not the
period continues as some girls menstrual cycle last less than three days, the
chances increase and continue to rise until ovulation.
This is why
fertility awareness methods that relies on cervical secretion (mucus discharge
from the vagina), advise against unprotected sex during period as secretions
cannot be detected at this time but there is a high risk of pregnancy.
However, after
ovulation, the chance of pregnancy begin to drop steadily
2. Can only Educated couple use FAM?
The
answer is NO, couples regardless of educational background can use FAM, the
only thing required here is the interest of the couple in the method they have chosen,
thus, they must be motivated and well trained and committed to avoiding unprotected
sex during the fertile period.
3. Are fertility awareness methods
reliable?
The
methods are reliable but, a method that work for one couple might not work for
another couple, Also, using spermicidal or withdrawal are not advisable during
fertile period.
3. How long will the use of other methods or assistance
be needed for each FAM?
The length of time or number of days varies based on the
woman’s cycle length. The average number of days a woman could be considered
fertile, and would need to abstain or use another method, with each method is:
standard days method. 12 days; two day method, 13 days; symptothermal method,
17 days; ovulation method, 18 days.
4.
What is new about the fertility awareness method, the standard days method and
the two day method?
These new fertility awareness methods are easier to use than
some of the older ones. They are more appealing ad effective. They are similar
to older methods because they rely on the same ways of judging when a woman
might be fertile by keeping tracks of the days of cycle for the two day method.
So far, there are few studies of these
methods. A clinical trial found that as the standard day method was commonly
used by women who has most cycles between 26 to 32 days long, there were 12
pregnancies per 100 women over the first year of sue in a clinical trial of the
two day method as it was commonly used, there were 14 pregnancies per 100 women
over the first year of use. This rate is based on those who remained in the
study. Women who detected secretions on fewer than 5 days on more than 14 days
in each cycle were excluded.
How Effective
is
Effectiveness of FAM depends on the user: Risk of pregnancy
is greatest when the man does not withdraw his penis from the vagina before
ejaculating.
